As an educational organization, the prime objective is to create a
botanical garden that will:

Nurture a sense of wonder and curiosity about the natural world

Objectives |

In the creation of the San Luis Obispo Botanical Garden, the objectives are to:
- Demonstrate sound horticultural
practices and principles applicable to the California climate
- Acquire, propagate and display
plants of ornamental and scientific interest
- Develop the infrastructure and
facilities as models of good conservation practices
- Create an inviting and aesthetically
pleasing garden setting

To meet those objectives, the focus will be on:
Education
- Community and school outreach • Docent tours
• Classes and seminars for all ages • Natural history resource center • Specialized
library services • Opportunities to learn about the diversity of
Mediterranean flora and
cultural relationships
Conservation
- Promotion of ecological literacy and
stewardship of the natural world • Information resource for habitat restoration,
conservation and preservation of rare plant species • Ecologically efficient water
and energy use
Research
- Facilities for research into rare and
endangered plants • Documented collection of plants available for study • Repository
for the introduction of plants from other Mediterranean climate regions to California
Aesthetics
- Natural habitat, plant community-based
design scheme • Attractive trails, allees and vistas • Highlighting of seasonal changes
Recreation
- A place for observation of nature,
reflection, reading, painting and photography • A venue for events
Design
- Based on established principles of
universal design (accessibility for all) and sustainability (demonstration of resource
conservation)
