Design Concept

The design concept, as expressed in The Portico Group's Master Plan for the San Luis Obispo Botanical Garden, is to create a setting for the display of selected plant material that reflects the natural and cultural landscapes of the Mediterranean climate regions of the world.

  • To communicate this concept to visitors, the design of the Botanical Garden will be organized into five Signature Landscapes that display the primary collections with a visitor center hub for orientation and education.  In addition, specialized gardens - the Gardens of Exploration - serve as an "executive summary" of the interpretative concepts to be explored in the main collections.
  • To Implement this concept, the principles of "universal design" - accessibility for all persons - will be incorporated into every aspect of the Garden.  The Botanical Garden will fully meet the ADA (Americans with Disabilities Act) requirements.

Where practical, existing site conditions, features and vegetation will be preserved and used as the basis for creating the various Signature Landscapes that organize the collections within plant community habitats.

A variety of settings and exhibit areas will be created to show the diversity of flora and the importance of water in the Mediterranean climate.

An inter-linking system of trails and paths will be created to lead visitors from

one area to another with interpretative stations providing destinations points throughout the Garden.  A tram will travel on the main paths, linking the five major areas of the Garden.

  • There will be recreational conveniences such as a café, amphitheater, visitor center gallery and gift shop to encourage extended visits.
  • Architectural features and art work will be integrated into the Garden to convey a variety of educational messages.
  • The Garden will be designed to be a model of natural resource conservation.
  • A "living perimeter fence" will protect the collections and provide a buffer zone to blend into the surrounding hillsides.
