The Interpretative Stations

 

Within each Signature Landscape there will be one or more interpretative stations where more focused learning about each region can take place.

The range of topics that will be covered includes:

  • Geology, climate and the importance of water
  • Plant and animal adaptations
  • Morphology, relationships and symbiosis
  • Human use, impact and resultant changes to the world's five Mediterranean regions

 

California

 

Interpretive Theme:

The Morros and Using the Land - The Chumash Lifeways - a Chumash "encampment," a living history re-enactment

 

Botanical Theme:

Ethnobotany - a study of interaction of plants and people

 

Mediterranean Basin

 

Interpretive Theme:

Human Impact - Past, Present and Future - discussion of reforestation, land restoration and reclamation

 

Botanical Theme:

Plant Species Survivability - insights into how plants of this region have survived thousands of years of human impact

 

 

Chili

 

Interpretive Themes:

Botanical Balance - unique attributes and adaptations of Chilean plants and ecosystems with a special emphasis on the interaction of the Humboldt current with the Equator

Ecological Interchange - cultural exchanges between Chile and Europe that led to changes in the Chilean ecosystems of today

 

Botanical Themes:

Adaptation and Change - plant migrations and genealogies in response to world climate changes and other factors

Rare and Endangered Plant Species - a look at the resources needed in order to maintain the biodiversity critical for ecosystem survival

 

South Africa

 

Interpretive Theme:

Pollination - The Process of Life - an exploration of the various ways in which mediterranean plants are pollinated with a focus on the many unique insect/plant associations that occur in South Africa

 

Botanical Theme:

A Study of Flowers - study of flower anatomy - their color, scent and structure as a means for seed production and species survival

 

Australia

 

Interpretive Themes:

Science and Plants - a display of aboriginal art, plant photography, plant and animal specimens and commercial products made from Australian plants

Migrations - a fossil dig site illustrating records of extinct and endangered Australian plants

 

Botanical Themes:

Plant Adaptations to Mediterranean Climates - how plants survive the sun, heat and drought periods of these regions of the world

Comparative Flora From Southern Hemisphere Regions - comparisons of mediterranean plants throughout the Southern Hemisphere
