Discover Mediterranean Plants Tour

Kindergarten-First Grade

The San Luis Obispo Botanical Garden showcases a collection of plants that are native to the five Mediterranean climates zones of the world.

The Mediterranean regions are widely separated from each other geographically and the flora of each is

distinctive, having developed independently for the most part. Nevertheless, the plants share remarkably similar characteristics that allow them to thrive in these unusual conditions.

The Discover Mediterranean Plants at the San Luis Obispo Botanical Garden gives youngsters a rare chance to see what plants from far away places in the world look like and to appreciate the beauty and diversity of plant life in their local communities here on the Central Coast of California.

The materials are aligned with the new Science Content Standards for California Public Schools and also are integrated with language arts, social studies and math lesson plans. We hope you enjoy discovering the botanical wonders of the Mediterranean regions of the world that are displayed right here in the San Luis Obispo Botanical Garden.

BASIC CONCEPTS

The garden tour is designed to illustrate five key concepts:

1.

There are five Mediterranean climate regions of the world.

2.

Each region has its own distinctive collection of plants that differ by color, shape, texture, appearance, smell, and structure.

3.

Most plants, no matter where in the world they grow, have the same plant parts: leaves, stems, roots, flowers and seeds.

4.

Most plants have the same requirements to grow: Sun, Soil, Water and Air.

5.

Seed bearing plants follow the same life cycle of Seed, Sprout, Plant, Flower, and back to a Seed.
