Mediterranean Plant Adaptations

Grades 2 - 3

The San Luis Obispo Botanical Garden features collections of plants that are native to the five Mediterranean climate zones.

The climatic conditions of each of the Mediterranean regions have a profound effect on their flora and fauna.  Adapting to prolonged periods of

summer drought means that plants have evolved interesting morphological characteristics and reproduction adaptations.

The Mediterranean Plant Adaptations tour at the San Luis Obispo Botanical Garden is a fascinating study of leaf texture and structure. We look forward to helping your students gain an appreciation of the diversity of plant life from the Mediterranean areas around the world and to strengthen their power of scientific observation.

The materials are aligned with the Science Content Standards for California Public Schools and also are integrated with language arts, social studies and math lesson plans. We hope you enjoy discovering the botanical wonders of the Mediterranean regions of the world-displayed right here in the San Luis Obispo Botanical Garden.

BASIC CONCEPTS

The garden tour is designed to illustrate five key concepts:

1.

There are five Mediterranean climate regions of the world.

2.

Plants of the five Mediterranean climate zones have to adapt to drought.

3.

There are several different types of leaf textures and leaf structures that help plants adapt to drought.

4.

The life cycle of annuals, bulbs, deciduous plants and perennials also are strategies plants use to adapt to drought.

5.

Drought tolerant plants and gardens help conserve water.
