California Natives / Peoples & Plants
Grades 3 - 4
|
 |
The
San Luis Obispo Botanical Garden features
collections of plants that are native to the
five Mediterranean climate zones of the world.
The native peoples of California, in particular
the Central Coast of California, included tribes
of the Chumash and the Salinans.
|
|
These creative and clever people survived on the Central Coast
of California for tens of thousands of years.
They utilized the natural world around them
including plants, animals, rocks and minerals in
order to survive generation to generation.

The California
Natives tour at the San Luis Obispo Botanical
Garden is a fascinating study in Ethnobotany.
Ethnobotany is "the plant lore of a race of
people, or the botany of a culture other than
ours." (Webster’s Dictionary) It is
studying the ongoing relationship between people
and plants. The Chumash and the Salinan peoples
relied on plants for their food, medicines,
tools, building materials as well as part of
their religious life.
