The Pre-school Tour

Pre-school

The San Luis Obispo Botanical Garden features collections of plants that are native to the five Mediterranean climate zones.

The climatic conditions of each of the Mediterranean regions have a profound effect on their flora and fauna.

Adapting to prolonged periods

of summer drought means that plants have evolved interesting morphological characteristics and reproduction adaptations.

The San Luis Obispo Botanical Garden is a delightful place for Pre-School students to engage in sensory activities that broaden their awareness of the natural world around them. Pre-School students learn how to use their eyes, ears, hands, noses and mouth to experience the diversity of Mediterranean plants that grow in the San Luis Obispo Botanical Garden. This field trip is completely hands-on and involves the use of all five senses. At the end of the field trip students are invited to taste some of the tree and vegetable crops that have their origins in the Mediterranean Basin of the world, such as almonds, olives, grapes, figs, pomegranates, asparagus, artichokes, and garbanzo beans. Come enjoy the garden using your five senses on this tour.

There are many diverse plants that grow in the San Luis Obispo Botanical Garden and all of them grow in the same kind of climate we have in California.

3.

Many food crops we eat come from the Mediterranean Basin area of the world.

4.

It is exciting to use ones’ five senses to learn about the diversity of plant life.

5.

Your five senses are valuable to you and can teach you to observe the world.
