Volunteer Opportunities

The Volunteer Opportunities in the Garden are diverse. Our mission, to connect people and plants, includes the need for volunteers to help support the Garden in all of the organizations functions. Our current needs include office and clerical workers, retail clerks, library assistants, public relations, marketing, graphic designers, photographers, business development, fund-raising, grant writers, light construction and building maintenance, all facets of event planning, event set-up crew, botanical and environmental educational speakers, artists, musicians, and the list goes on. Whether you have a few hours each week, each month, or during the year there is a job or task to fit your time allowance and interests. Join us and reap the bounty of satisfying work, meeting new friends and building a world class Botanical Garden. For more information about volunteering call (805) 541-1400 ext. 302 to leave a message for the Volunteer Coordinator to contact you.  To sign up as a volunteer click here to download and print the Volunteer Application.  Fill it our, mail it in and the Volunteer Coordinator will contact you.

Membership Committee - Volunteers are needed to join the year round Membership Committee. Come join the team that plans membership recruitment and retention and work at events.

Docents – The San Luis Obispo Botanical Garden has a team of volunteers who give docent-led tours in the garden to both adults and children. The Children’s Docents conduct free educational field trips to school groups. The Adult Docents provide tours at the Saturday @ the Garden programs as well as to other garden groups, senior citizen groups and/or other groups who want to be shown the garden. We offer tours in a host of topics such as Plant Adaptations, Ethnobotany, Homeowner Horticulture, California Natives, and Water-Wise Gardening.

Docent Training – A six-week training session is offered each spring for individuals who want to become Docents. We offer training for both Adult Docents and Children’s Docents. A nominal fee is required to cover the cost of the training manual.
